This book is a great overview of Environmental Science! I only wish our local leaders here on the Gulf Coast would read it and act accordingly, as numerous issues in the mainstream media plague this area. In the Mobile Bay, Alabama area alone, there have been media warnings not to eat local seafood due to mercury contamination, numerous cases of Flesh Eating Bacteria, shell-fish bedding areas closed due to pollution caused by heavy rain runoff, and other areas reported closed to oyster harvesting, etc.. due to Pollution.One would think, all the major towns and cities astride Mobile, Bay Alabama and the 5-Rivers that feed into it would in fact have dedicated, full time Engineering Departments manned by full-time, city-salaried and highly experienced Professional Certified Engineers of several disciplines, one of which being an Environmental Engineer- but that is simply not the case!As this book points out Environmental Science is a complex discipline, incorporating economics, political science, chemistry, geology, physics, biology, etc...! So the value of such individuals to any area fraught with the issues brought to light in the local media would be enormous.Also, this book also lists all the Federal Agencies and their respective contributions to Environmental Safety as well as Acts Passed by Congress to manage the Environment. The EPA, for instances can in fact sue entities for damaging the environment! As a matter of fact the EPA- ArcGis lists Chemical Dead Zones outside the mouth of Mobile Bay, Alabama!Surprisingly, there has been nothing in the media about the EPA, CDC nor FDA looking into the Flesh Eating Bacteria, Mercury in Seafood, nor all the pollution reported!As this book also points out, storm drains are hard to regulate, but I question that, when all along the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay, Alabama, there are in fact numerous highly visible drains that drain right into the Bay for everyone to clearly view- see photos of underground sewer lid at sea level and recently repaired drain vicinity Fairhope Alabama Public Pier with Mobile Bay water flowing in (?)...is this all correct engineering?????? (Also appears Fairhope, Alabama not only City in Baldwin County fraught issues- see picture open and unattended Electrical Box, astride HWY 98, stone's throw away Daphne Fire Station and across highy numerous businesses and hospital, during Hurricane Harvey rains- wonder if any businesses lost power or the hospital?)Also, in mentioning storm-drains, this area of the US is known to be the wettest in the entire United States- i.e. more rainfall, yet when heavy rain occurs all the major roads get flooded and people often have to get out and push their automobiles through almost knee deep water in Mobile, Alabama itself. Environmental Engineers could greatly assist with this issue and the resultant pollution it creates in Mobile Bay!Finally, Environmental Engineers are also involved in mining operations. There are ongoing, and historical mining operations along Mobile Bay Alabama. Surprisingly, the Alabama Department of Environmental Engineering designated the Alabama Home Builders Association to be a certified Quality Control entity for mining operations in the state of Alabama. This means that samples from mining operations go through two sets of hands before reaching the EPA, potentially! Also, as best this author can tell, subdivisions, etc.. are in fact being built on top off played out mining areas. This is concerning as some of these residential areas, if built on top of old mining operations, are reporting sink-holes, etc.. and warning children to stay out of "dredge ponds" as they call them! Highly skilled Environmental Engineers could help, on the local level, to ensure, that if this is in fact occurring, these areas are more than safe for development and habitation, as well as recommend proper safety precautions for all citizens and the active mining operation, as well as provide better oversight and updates to local community leaders!("A shady government influences the moral behavior of its citizens" Quoted From Scientific American Mind-Behavior & Society Article "National Corruption Breeds Personal Dishonesty-A shady government influences the moral behavior of its citizens" by By Simon Makin on March 1, 2017)This book is well worth the read for a great overview of Environmental Science and should be read by all City Leaders along the Gulf Coast of the United states!

Well rounded coverage of factors to consider in environmental issues. I did not see much coverage on materials and economics on topics of ethanol fuel and the huge impact on the environment. Likewise, I thought there should have been a mention of the impact on strategic materials used in electric vehicle production and economic props to promote them. Much of the same applies to wind turbines and other technologies that impact materials and economic (our tax cots). Overall a good intro to environmental science.

I recently took a college course in environmental science. I thought it would be pretty easy, but I was very wrong. I did poorly on the tests from the start, and struggled with the chapters in the textbook. I decided to order this for dummies book in hopes that it would expand upon my textbook, and it did. Nearly everything in my textbook was covered in detail in this book. The course I took was particularly difficult because it was online. Thanks to diligent studying and this book, I ended up getting a B. Highly recommend this if you are taking a course in environmental science, or even if you are just interested in the subject!

Since the publication of Peter Camenzind in 1904 Hermann Hesse has been loved and hated by his own people, ignored and worshipped by the English speaking world, accused of being a Nazi sympathizer, and blacklisted by almost every newspaper in Hitler's Germany.

Hesse was a prolific author, publishing seventeen novels as well as several poems and essays, and, though mostly fiction, his works tended to follow the path of his own life, and his protagonists wrestle with the same problems he faced. He was constantly battling with the conflict of the mind and the body, the spiritual world and the sensual one.

During his life he struggled with questions of nationalism and pacifism, living through two world wars that nearly destroyed his native country. He desperately craved social acceptance, but found himself to be awkward, a natural loner, and wondered if the role of the artist was inevitably to be an outsider; an observer, but not a participant in life.

These questions and more are mirrored in his fiction, as he uses his characters to live out the different paths available to him, and the readers are reminded of similar dualities in their own lives. His novels tend to feature pairs of characters, one representing the ideal he wishes he could achieve, and one the less romantic reality he knows he must accept.

Though his books were set in a wide range of places and times, and though their characters differed drastically in many ways, some themes reappear throughout his works, and these repeating patterns give the reader a great deal of insight into the mind of Hermann Hesse. One of his earliest novels, Demian, focused on the Neitzschian concept of the Apollonian versus the Dionysian spirit. This is a conflict between the passionate and the structured drives that occur within all people, and it is a conflict with which Hesse wrestled his entire life.

Another important idea within Demian is the concept of right and wrong. Hesse once wrote in a letter to his parents that "the morality of artists is replaced by aesthetics," and in the novel Sinclair expresses an appreciation for music because it is amoral, or outside of good and evil. According to Nietzsche, morality is a construct that arises solely from society and only by shaking off the chains of that construct and exerting their will can anyone truly be who they are.

This idea of finding oneself, of searching for the deepest, most honest parts of one's own nature is another concept that Hesse struggled with, and another that appears in all of his books. Hesse came from a family that saw the innate nature of mankind as savage and somehow unclean, and who believed that religion was the means required to control that nature. The woman is a rockstar, insanely smart, and is a board-certified Doctor of Natural Medicine who has really been there too. Her interest in thyroid conditions started with years of frustration going through the conventional medical system without any relief of her symptoms, which later turned out to be a diagnosis of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis.The book dives into the seven main causes of thyroid dysfunction that are keeping you sick, and why we need to go so much more beyond food for true healing, from stress management, to healing gut and liver issues, other hormonal imbalances, addressing heavy metal toxicity or parasites, and the list goes on. And it is, of course, a cookbook – so Dr. Becky breaks down the foods that we should be avoiding to help heal hormonal imbalances and thyroid disease, and the ones we should make sure to include as much as possible to speed along that healing.I’ve personally done a LOT of research on thyroid conditions and healing diets for them, since it runs in my family, and Dr. Becky’s book, the 30-Day Thyroid Reset Plan, is honestly one of the most comprehensive yet easy-to-understand books about thyroid health and healing I’ve ever come across in my years of personal research with my own family’s thyroid conditions and years in school as well. She also goes into exactly what you should do if you suspect you have a thyroid condition – exactly what lab tests to order (which is way beyond what a conventional doctor will typically do!)What I love about this book is it’s not just a 30-day meal plan with a bunch of gorgeous, kickass recipes. I was so excited to get this in the mail today. Started reading immediately and already love how Dr. Campbell clearly explains her approach to helping diagnose underlying root causes of disease (and how this approach differs from conventional medicine). The recipes look delicious and just what I need to infuse into my weekly menus for my family. And I love that she included DIY recipes for common household needs that actually seem easy and do-able! I am a researcher and a scientist trained in engineering and computer science. As I progressed in my career, I felt the need of deeper meaning of everyday math I encountered.Somehow, I became aware of Hilbert spaces. To understand the concept, I started reading about them. Quickly, I realized the concept of Analysis. I took a stab at the topic following Elementary Real Analysis by Thomson and Bruckner. It was a very good introduction. I enjoyed reading it. It provided me the foundation, I was looking for.Then I struggled through five or six different graduate level texts. Eventually, I found Royden’s Real Analysis. I have only read the first two chapters, and everything suddenly started making sense and gel together.I am awestruck, how Royden has figured out a way to organize all the concepts in some kind of natural sequence, and the amount of details on each concept. With that said, I have used internet to flush through the details on per need basis.Simply, I have become a fan of Royden’s text. Real analysis helps me in everyday scientific tasks as well. I have a new vantage point.

This book, as far as I consider it, is a classic. Although it has some errata and stuff, it is one of the best books ever written in Real Analysis. I am happy to managed get this specific edition since the author didn't manage to publish its fourth edition, while it was Fitz Patrick the one who edited that edition. I think that books are more valuable when the authors are the only ones who edit them, otherwise I don't think they're worth reading. At least that's my opinion.Then, about the book, it takes to know some modern algebra, set theory and basic analysis to study from this fine book. I haven't seen a book that specially teaches Daniell's integral and this one does. The book is rich on references where one could further study material related to real analysis to the higher level. I think this book will be very useful to serious mathematicians and to those self-studying guys who love the rigour.

I had this as my reference for my first graduate analysis course. It is absolutely excellent and I vastly prefer it to Rudin. Covers some basics of metric spaces, then some fairly nice amounts of topology, measure theory, topological groups, etc. Very pleased :)

I appreciate the approach Royden chooses in beginning with Lebesgue measure first then addressing general measure at the end of the book. For those of you frustrated by this approach, you can jump right to chapters 11 and 12 for a general treatment first. While Royden doesn't prove every theorem, enough are proved to give you an idea of how to approach the problem sets. If you take your time and follow each theorem's proof (and of course make your own notes after you understand each proof), you'll get what's going on. I thought some of the exercises were very tough given the fairly straightforward theorems Royden proves in the chapters (I didn't particularly care for the Cantor set problems, amongst others). It is interesting to contrast the slow pace of chapters 1-4 (even with chapters 1&2 essentially skimmed) with the quicker treatment in chapters 11&12. Towards the end, I very much appreciated how chapters 3&4 complemented chapters 11&12 (and vice versa). Very nicely done.

Many people criticize this book as unclear and unnecessarily abstract, but I think these comments are more appropriately directed at the subject than at this book and its particular presentation. I find this classic to be one of the best books on measure theory and Lebesgue integration, a difficult and very abstract topic. Royden provides strong motivatation for the material, and he helps the reader to develop good intuition. I find the proofs and equations exceptionally easy to follow; they are concise but they do not omit as many details as some authors (i.e. Rudin). Royden makes excellent use of notation, choosing to use it when it clarifies and no more--leaving explanations in words when they are clearer. The index and table of notation are excellent and contribute to this book's usefulness as a reference.The construction of Lebesgue measure and development of Lebesgue integration is very clear. Exercises are integrated into the text and are rather straightforward and not particularly difficult. It is necessary to work the problems, however, to get a full understanding of the material. There are not many exercises but they often contain crucial concepts and results.This book contains a lot of background material that most readers will either know already or find in other books, but often the material is presented with an eye towards measure and integration theory. The first two chapters are concise review of set theory and the structure of the real line, but they emphasize different sorts of points from what one would encounter in a basic advanced calculus book. Similarly, the material on abstract spaces leads naturally into the abstract development of measure and integration theory.This book would be an excellent textbook for a course, and I think it would be suitable for self-study as well. Reading and understanding this book, and working most of the problems is not an unreachable goal as it is with many books at this level. This book does require a strong background, however. Due to the difficult nature of the material I think it would be unwise to try to learn this stuff without a strong background in analysis or advanced calculus. A student finding all this book too difficult, or wanting a slower approach, might want to examine the book "An Introduction to Measure and Integration" by Inder K. Rana, but be warned: read my review of that book before getting it.

I am rating this book only three stars, not because there's anything wrong with it per se, but just regarding its ability to prepare a person to take and pass the LX0-103 and LX0-104 tests (which I took and passed today, in fact, on my first attempt).But first off, let me cover the good stuff. It is well-written and, as someone with over a dozen years of Unix/Linux experience (including casual sysadmin work), I could find nothing factually wrong with it. The second half of the book, which covered the LX0-104 exam objectives, was definitely on-point relative to the exam I took today.It's the first half, the LX0-103 preparation portion, that was not really adequate. In a way, it's not the book's fault; the 103 test felt more like a command-line trivia test than a legitimate test of my Linux experience/knowledge, expecting me to be able to fill in the blanks (literally) regarding distribution-specific file names, file locations, and obscure options and switches. And yet, this is a test prep book, meaning that its job was supposed to be to prepare me for the level of specificity that I needed to be able to provide on the test; the relatively simple multiple-choice questions in the book, as well as the practice tests that you can unlock on the Sybex site, hardly approached the level of difficulty that I encountered on the real 103 test, and didn't even hint at the existence of fill-in-the-blank questions. I mean, I did pass the 103 (barely), but it's not as if some of my correct answers didn't come from previous knowledge/experience rather than the book.It is a good Linux book, and don't take anything I've said to mean otherwise. But I do wish it had worked me a bit harder on the 103 stuff, because (based on the book/website's practice questions) I went into that exam much more confident than I should have been.

I used the Kindle version of this book and it was very good. It covered the objectives clearly, and provided good reviews at the end of the chapters. It also breaks the book in two, one major section for each test. e.g. Chapters 1-5 are for LX0-103, 6-10 are for LX0-104.The best part of the book is access to Sybex's website for their example tests, which provides two example tests. Each are about 50 questions each, many of the questions are very close or the same as the actual tests. Also, when you review the results it provides the "whys" for all answers. e.g. Answer B is incorrect for... Answer A,and D are correct because... The tests are modeled very well to help get the feel for actual test. e.g. Choose two answers..., choose three answers..., choose all that apply... The only part that is bad is that the test is not all multiple choice, some questions are fill in the blank, which I think is much harder.To prepare for the test I read this book through once, then took the Sybex test twice, then took the test.After using this book the actual test for LX0-103 took me about 20 minutes to complete, and another 20 to review. I was done in 45 minutes, start to finish. And I passed. On to test 2, LX0-104.EDIT: Took test two, LX0-104, same result. Test took about 45 minutes totdal from start to finish, passing. Good book, better software. Obtaining this cert also provides LPIC-1 cert, which also provides the Suse cert. Three certs in one. Good luck.

TL;DR: There are better books for anything linux related that you could want to learn. Look for specific books on your topic or the Pearson book if you are studying for the linux+ test.There are two reasons for why you would want to buy a book like this 1) if you want to study for the linux+ exam 2) if you want to get a general overview of linux. This book does neither particularly well and is in fact disappointing in some areas.1)Since this is a book specifically for the linux+ exam the book should adequately prepare the reader for the exam. Now I don't think there is any one resource that will guarantee that you will be able to pass the exam after reading, but this book does this job especially poorly. There are other books ( namely Pearsons) that give better explanation, more information, and a better focus on the test. The online tests that are provided are nice but they make the test seem significantly easier than it is in reality. The exercises in the book are almost always trivial and don't really help you get a deeper understanding of the material. This can give a student the false pretense that they will do well on the exam with no problems but is actually unprepared. So the book under-prepares you but gives the illusion that you are not.2)The book states that it would be a good resource to anyone that wants to learn more about linux. While this book is better than nothing there are plenty of books that would give a better introduction to linux. If you are a beginner this book is not presented in a way that will get you used to using linux. It wants to be a test prep book and presents itself as such. If you are more experienced the book doesn't go in depth enough for you to really get much out of it. Also, because this is a book for the exam there are a lot of features that are discussed that you will never use and aren't integral to your understanding of the system as a beginner.Also something to note is some of the questions given in the book do not have the answers in the reading. It seems pretty ridiculous that the author will expect knowledge of the student that was not included in the text when this is supposed to be a test prep book.
