I bought this book for my son's sixth birthday, uncertain of its message, but hopeful that it had something to do with growing up, and finding God's purpose for your life. It's all in the title-a young acorn, afraid to leave its "mother" tree, goes on a series of adventures until it finally matures enough to become a constant and reliable companion for a young girl, who is also searching for her purpose.Throughout the book, this tree compares himself to those around him-the orange trees, who grow faster and bear fruit. The flowering plants, whose yield is plentiful and more immediately gratifying. He is frustrated by how slowly he grows, by how unremarkable he seems to be, not realizing that it is he who will become the biggest, the strongest, and the greatest of them all.This message was exactly what I wanted to get across to my son. It is so easy for children to get caught up in comparing their accomplishments to others, especially if they mature much more slowly than their peers, or in my case, their siblings. I have children on both ends, and this book can speak to both of them.I was able to read this to a 3 and 6 year old, but it was a bit too long for my three year old, who had run off to grab another book 3/4 of the way through.Also, if you become emotional when you read "love you forever", this book will probably make you cry. I'm not overly emotional, but I couldn't help myself in the end, as I saw the message come full circle.The analogy isn't completely logical, but it works for a child, and I have been able to use it for both of my children throughout the week as their various frustrations come up.4 stars for the length, but with a little editing, it could easily be a five star book (I'm not sure the story line with the orange grove is necessary).

Excellent Message. Want to be clear that the point of the story is so good and relevant for all ages. 3 stars because story is lengthy which is fine but struggled (only slightly) to hold the attention of 3 & 6 yr old. Held their attention for first read through but not necessarily one that would be requested again and again. Better for older reader reader but not one they would necessarily pick up on their own to read.

Author knows for metaphorical books to teach character and to connect with the child. Sometimes those metaphors are completely missed if the child is not old enough to understand the metaphors and even when explained they don’t get it then they are too young for the book. It’s a picture book with a cute story and concept, but my 6 year old ( very smart and understands things like an expression and some metaphors after explained) has not completely grasped this metaphore after reading a few times. It’s a cute story and she will eventually so we kept it and have many of this authors books since they are written well, teach great concepts and they will even learn more about writing styles and metaphors as they continue to be exposed to them.

Physical book was sub-standard: I received this book quickly but was initially disappointed with the quality the book arrived in. Pages were not cut properly and were still stuck together. Some of the pages were folded and ran through the length of the page. My son didn’t mind the imperfections or seem to notice them, so I didn’t return the book.Story: The actual story is very cute and has a great message for everyone, young and old. It’s a little bit lengthy for a children’s bedtime story. It usually takes my son, 5 years old, and I at least 30 minutes to read. He enjoys reading the book with me and I enjoy our story time with this book. It’s a meaningful, inspiring, and encouraging story.

This is one of my 4yr old's favorite book. We started reading it wen he was 3yrs old.The first time my husband read it to him, he, my husband, got teary eyed. He didn't know what the book was about when he read it to him and he was caught by surprised; got him thinking about our son growing up.So yes, This book, made a grown man cry. LOL

I love this book. I love it for what it is, and I love it for how it speaks to me.I am now approaching age 60, and perhaps now I can understand what it means better than I ever could as a child. Perhaps in 20 years I will understand it even better. It is a story that grows with you.The acorn is called by his/her mother to "Just be the tree God made you to be."As a child I wanted to be lots of things. I wanted to be safe, but time and situations carried me from my safe zone. As a young adult I wanted to be all of the things that my friends were, and discovered that I didn't have their skills I had my own. Later I would begin to discover my own skills and talents. At age 50, I would finally return to college to complete my MDiv.I served one church, and am now serving three small churches. As I grow older, God expands my understanding of the ways that I can be the oak God calls me to be. As I grow older, I constantly find new ways to be me.This book makes an excellent gift for new parents, but it is just as appropriate for young teens wondering about their future.

Inside the tiny acorn, is a great oak just waiting to grow. The little acorn didn't realize his potential, but his mother oak did. She reassured him that he can be a great oak tree of his own one day, and he did. He grew taller than the orange tree and the roses in the garden. He grew so large and strong, that one day his huge branches were able to hold a swing for a little girl. He watched her grow and become older until one day she no longer played on the swing. She sulked below its branches, needing a lesson about her own potential. Max Lucado brings the story of great potential into the hands of children. Beautiful illustrations and a powerfully written story really work to catch a child's imagination. A great read for children 5 and older!

I thought it might be too advanced for my kindergartener, but he enjoyed it and understood the point. A really cute story- simply written but powerful message.
