Vulliamy, a British journalist with keen powers of observation and nerves of steel, describes what he saw during his 1992-1993 coverage of the war in Bosnia. Much of his compelling narrative consists of scenes in which drunken thugs and uniformed lynch mobs perpetrate outrages and atrocities against civilians, including the systematic rape of women. The testimony he collected for his chapter on rape in the war zone encompasses, as he puts it, "every conceivable dark cranny of sexual sadism and male violence." Vulliamy denounces the UN and the European Community for failing to come to the aid of Bosnia's stillborn democracy, especially its Muslim population, and for denying them the means to defend themselves. His coverage of the fighting in the former Yugoslavia earned him Grenada Television's Foreign Correspondent of the Year award in 1992. Photos.

As this review is being written, the morning Internet brings news of fresh Serbian "ethnic cleansing." The shock is not diminished, and Vulliamy's excellent work of firsthand reportage of the Serb and Croat war against the Muslims provides both context and understanding of the carnage, not least in the words of victims and participants. Most chilling are the words of a Serbian "intellectual" that Sarajevo was theater to divert world attention from what was happening elsewhere. More complete than Roy Gutman's excellent A Witness to Genocide (LJ 10/1/93), Vulliamy's account of the Bosnian war and the betrayal by the diplomats of "Western civilization" is so vivid that reading it produces moral and physical pain. This account of human and cultural genocide is essential reading for all but the morally indifferent.

Anyone who has followed the outrages perpetrated by Bosnian Serbs and Croats upon their Muslim neighbors must find it hard to be objective; perhaps to his credit, Vulliamy makes it clear that objectivity is not his goal here. Rather, he attempts to show the horrors inflicted on a people whose only crime is to be caught between the virulent revanchist nationalisms of Serb and Croat. While Vulliamy avoids the trap of equating the Serbs with Nazis and the Muslims with Jews, the parallels are certainly there. Vulliamy's rage is directed primarily against Serbian nationalists, but he also displays contempt for the inactivity of the Western powers. This is a work that tears at the emotions and shocks the sensibilities of decent people. Nevertheless, it is essentially a one-sided scream; while it eloquently serves to highlight the ongoing horror of Bosnia, it does not point the way to an ultimate, lasting solution that can send the demons of ethnic hatred back to the hell whence they came. I bet the first edition, back when it was initially written, was great for the time period. This version, however, is a hot mess based on outdated science and written almost specifically for an audience of occupational therapists who haven't read up on their field since 2007. Now that's a scary thought...

This is the 4th edition. If you have an older edition, then it is time to update. The information is priceless with diagnostic information, to evaluations, and treatment. I took this to my occupational therapy fieldwork in a stroke rehab hospital and all the therapistsame borrowed it and they even discussed purchasing a copy for the department.

I won't lie, this can be a bit painful to read through... but it contains so much valuable information about disorders, symptoms, evaluations, treatment styles, and intervention ideas. A very helpful resource!

As an entry level OT, I often use this book to help me better understand the nature of the deficits experienced by my patients with cognitive, visual,or perceptual problems. Although I haven't made it through the entire book, I've found it to be well outlined and detailed. I definitely feel more confident in my treatment approach and explaining the deficits to patients and their families. The topic matter is definitely advanced level material, but overall highly recommended if you have an interest in vision, cognition, and perception.

I didn't need this book for school, but I have an interest in neuro rehab. I used this resource on my clinical fieldwork quite a bit!!

As the mother of two boys with autism, I am always on the lookout for programs that might help reduce hyperactivity and tics. Yoga For the Special Child has helped in that quest.This book provides clear visuals as well as written directions on how to coax your child to engage in various postures and breathing exercises, first passively, and in later stages, actively.I actually began the yoga with my son just as he was beginning to fall asleep. As the weeks have moved on, I have introduced some of the postures that require his active participation.Very simply, he loves the entire process---and yes, it does leave him much more relaxed.While I found myself raising my eyebrows at some of the claims of benefit enjoyed by severely disabled participants in the writer's yoga school, I do see where consistent use of yoga can provide a child with the means to self regulate hyperactivity and tics.I do recommend the book in that light, and I am grateful to have found it just as I feared we would have to medicate for hyperactivity.It's also a fun bonding experience. I finally have something I can do with my son for a change!

I am a Pediatric Occupational therapist and was interested in learning about how to use yoga to help special needs youngsters. I read this book and then attended a training with the author and that began my journey into learning about myself and how to better help the students I am blessed to work with. Ms. Sumar is "Real", no pretense, just one woman sharing her journey which is now helping thousands of people world wide. Yoga for the special child is THE best therapy technique I think working with children with Special Needs. She describes her approach, which is to "see the child as perfect and whole" and "connect to them on a spiritual level" before moving into the Yoga. She is an inspired teacher and she inspires others because of her warmth and compassion. A true yogini, Ms. Sumars book is well worth the investment and might just start you on a journey of self discovery.

If you don't know anything about yoga or therapy, then this is a great book to get to use with you child who has a disability. If you do have a yoga background then a lot of it is common sense on how to stretch your child. The great thing about this book is that it has specific exercises for each stage, so it is a handy reference tool.

the book has great value for mothers with children having handicapped needs. She has such dedication and love for the children that you can see the healing come through the pages. This book is now in the hands of hundreds of needy here in my township and there will be ever growing fan club of Sonia Sumar.

I couldn't put this book down! I've actually read the previous editions and have taken several Yoga for the Special Child Courses over the past 10 years but I still couldn't stop reading. This new edition is so beautifully and clearly presented--it is a blessing and a gift to the world, as is it's author Sonia Sumar. Read the book! Take the class! It will be one of the best decisions of your life :) Namaste!

I love this book for my CP son. Not only does it offer great therapy techniques, but an inspirational story of love and percervierience. I checked this out of the library numerous times before I decided we had to have our own copy. The book arrived in pristine condition.I would reccommend this book to any parent of a special needs child, regardless of disability or age.

Great book

i think the book is very informative, especially for a yoga teacher teaching special needs. My only concern is that even though there are warnings, that some parents may try some of the poses without doctor consent or any experience with yoga. As a yoga teacher, who teaches special needs and with a daughter with down syndrome, I thought it was a great book>

There are cardiovascular drugs listed in the book that overexpress TGF-Beta and dilate irreversibly the aorta, or that increase the risk of heart failure, etc. Facts of this sort are not even mentioned in this book. The book is repugnantly kind to the pharmaceutical industry.
